Porter-Cable’s 690LRVS Router Offers Same Reliability With Added Features, More Value

Porter-Cable’s 690LRVS Router Offers Same Reliability With Added Features, More Value

FEBRUARY 8, 2002 – ATLANTA, GA– Porter-Cable announced the introduction of a new 1-3/4 peak horsepower router - the model 690LRVS - today during International Builders’ Show in Atlanta, Georgia. Woodworking Product Manager Mark Woodlief said, “For years, professionals have recognized the Porter-Cable model 690 router as the industry standard because we combine convenient operation with the most important attribute to the professional woodworker - reliability. The 690LR is an upgraded version that maintains the same reliability while adding additional features like variable speed, more power, a lever release clamp, and a dust proof switch."

The model 690LRVS is a more powerful version of Porter-Cable’s model 690 router, which is currently the most commonly sold professional router in the United States. Upgraded to 1-3/4 peak horsepower (formerly 1-1/2HP), this 10-amp unit features a variable speed range between 10,000 and 23,000 RPM motor. One of the most attractive features of the 690LRVS is its highly popular interchangeable base system, which is fully compatible with Porter-Cable’s standard base, plunge base, D-handle base, and router table. Woodlief said, "Although power was increased, the size of the motor housing was maintained to ensure compatibility with existing standard bases."

In addition to the 690LRVS motor’s interchangeability, this unit features a lever base motor release for quick and convenient height adjustments and bit changes. Woodlief said, “The lever release is convenient both under a router table and in freehand applications." Height adjustments are simply made by releasing the lever, twisting the motor up or down in the base, then locking the lever back into place. Porter-Cable improved the grip of the 690LRVS by providing more ergonomic handles to fit the contours of the user’s hands.

In additional feature to this model, referred to as a drop-lock, prevents the motor from dropping out when the unit is placed under a table. Users can release the motor by pushing up, turning the motor housing and removing it from the table.

Porter-Cable upgraded the 690LRVS from a toggle switch design to a dust protected rocker switch. Woodlief said, "Reliability is always a number one priority with our routers. The dust proof switch simply improves reliability by sealing out harmful dust contaminates." While the top cap of the 690LRVS shows a new look with the new switch, it still offers a flat-top design in order to stand freely in the upside-down position during bit changes. An auto-release collet system features the ability to prevent “frozen” bits while accepting 1/2², 1/4², and 3/8² collets for a variety of applications including round-overs, profiles, laminate trimming, fluting, beading, etc.

Weighing slightly over eight pounds, the model 690LRVS comes complete with the router motor, standard base, 1/4" and 1/2" collets, two collet wrenches, and instruction manual. Available in April 2002, the 690LRVS router is expected to sell for approximately $179.

The 690LRVS is only one of several new router offerings made available by Porter-Cable. Other versions of this unit include the 690LR, which offers all of the same features as the 690LRVS with the exception of variable speed. Currently available on the market, the 690LR is expected to sell for approximately $159. A third unit – the model 693LRPK – combines the 690LR with the added benefit of a plunge base … all in one kit. Thanks to the interchangeability of this unit, Porter-Cable has taken the sacrifice out of choosing between fixed base and plunge routers. Available in April 2002, the 693LRPK offers both in one kit for only $199. The fourth offering – the model 691PW – offers a complete router workshop by including the model 690 router motor, a table, stand, and D-handle base. Currently available on the market, this unit is expected to sell for approximately $299.
