One Size No Longer Fits All With Porter-Cable’s New Cordless Drill/Driver Line-Up: Porter-Cable’s New Cordless Lineup Features Innovative Grip-To-Fit® System
8/22/2002

AUGUST 23, 2002 – ATLANTA, GA – Porter-Cable Corporation introduced three new cordless drill/driver kits – the model 9984 (19.2 Volt), model 9978 (14.4 Volt), 9966 (12 Volt) – and two new cordless hammer drill/driver kits – the model 9987 (19.2 Volt), and model 9977 (14.4 Volt) – today during a press conference at the International Woodworking Fair in Atlanta. Porter-Cable Product Manager Todd Craft said, “This new drill/driver lineup offers the ultimate ergonomic advantage by allowing the user to customize the handle size using interchangeable soft grips. With higher torque, more work per charge, and an enhanced ergonomic design, these drill/drivers offer users excellent comfort, power, and control – they’ll handle any job and fit any hand.”

All five new drill/driver models tout similar features developed to meet the challenges users face when working on all projects, big or small. Standing tall above the shoulders of standard soft-grip handle designs, the innovative Grip-To-Fit® interchangeable soft grip system – standard on all new models – distinguishes Porter-Cable’s new cordless lineup from the competition. Grip-To-Fit® ensures a comfortable and customized fit to users’ hands. This unique system uses three removable grip inserts interchangeably. Users can adjust the tool’s grip size by simply removing one screw, inserting the desired grip size, and replacing the screw.

In the new cordless lineup, Porter-Cable developed a power range designed to tackle any application - both professional and sophisticated do-it-yourselfer. Porter-Cable achieved longer run-times through the addition of 2.4-amp-hour batteries, which provide more work per charge with less battery recharging. The 2.4 amp-hour batteries work in tandem with a new universal battery charger that can be used with all Porter-Cable voltage batteries.

The 2-amp-hour batteries on the model 9978 (14.4 volt drill/driver), 9977 (14.4 volt hammer drill/driver) and model 9966 (12 volt drill/driver) also provide outstanding run time and work per charge, while providing maximum charge and discharge cycles with no memory effect.

Utilizing three-stage planetary gearing systems, each new Porter-Cable cordless model features 13 steel planetary gears – first stage gears all bearing-mounted - to provide smoother operation and longer life. Delivering 470 in.-lbs. of maximum torque, the 19.2 volt models weigh 6.2 pounds, and have a high-speed range of 0-1,500 RPM, and a low-speed range of 0-500 RPM. While in hammer mode, the model 9987 cordless hammer drill offers a range of 0 to 19,500 BPM. The 14.4 volt models weigh 5.6 lbs., deliver 420 in.-lbs of maximum torque, and have a high-speed range of 0-1,400 RPM, and a low-speed range of 0-450 RPM. While in hammer mode, the model 9977 cordless hammer drill offers a range of 0 to 18,850 BPM. The 12 volt model weighs 5.2 lbs., has a high-speed RPM range of 0-1,300 RPM, and a low-speed range of 0-425 RPM and delivers 385 in.-lbs. of maximum torque. Additionally, a 22-position adjustable clutch on each new model provides a wide spectrum of choices to allow for high-torque applications as well as delicate woodworking projects that require very little torque.

Another unique feature of Porter-Cable's cordless system is the advanced charging technology for these high-capacity non-memory batteries. Using a unique soft-pulse battery charger, the system minimizes battery heat build-up by charging with bursts of electricity rather than a continuous charge. This process produces a more efficient charge and therefore extends battery life well beyond 1,000 charges. The one-hour charger features diagnostic indicators to alert when it is fast charging or trickle charging. Also, it detects defective battery packs needing replacement.

All five models have T-handle designs featuring variable speed in both forward and reverse, with automatic electronic braking. A heavy-duty switch provides a large heat sink, which aids in heat dissipation and thereby increases the life of both the switch and the brake. All five models feature premium quality 1/2² keyless, ratcheting-locking steel chucks to provide maximum bit gripping strength and holding power. In addition, the hammer drill/driver chucks incorporate extremely durable carbide jaw inserts to ensure long life in the most demanding hammer drill applications.

All 19.2 volt models come complete with two batteries, the new Universal one hour diagnostic battery charger, three Grip-To-Fit handle inserts (small, medium, and large), side handle, owner’s manual, double-ended bit tip, and shock-resistant case with metal latches. Available in November 2002, the model 9984 19.2 volt drill/driver is expected to sell for approximately $250 and model 9987 19.2 volt hammer drill/driver is expected to sell for approximately $275.

The 14.4V and 12V models come complete with two batteries, a one hour diagnostic battery charger, three Grip-To-Fit handle inserts (small, medium, and large), owner’s manual, double-ended bit tip, and shock-resistant case with metal latches. Also available in November 2002, the model 9977 14.4 volt hammer drill/driver includes a side handle and is expected to sell for approximately $210, the model 9978 14.4 volt drill/driver is expected to sell for approximately $185, and the model 9966 12 volt drill/driver is expected to sell for $155.
