Porter-Cable’s New TIGER CLAW™ Reciprocating Saw Makes Every Cut Within Reach

Porter-Cable’s New TIGER CLAW™ Reciprocating Saw Makes Every Cut Within Reach

FEBRUARY 8, 2002 – ATLANTA, GA - Porter-Cable unveiled the world’s most versatile reciprocating saw – the model 9740 Tiger Claw™ - today during the International Builders’ Show in Atlanta, Georgia. Industrial Product Manager Dave Hall said, “Porter-Cable’s new TIGER CLAWä goes beyond the limitations of conventional reciprocating saws to offer a 180° pivot adjustment and a 360° blade rotation. These distinctive features truly make it possible for professionals to overcome the challenges of close-quarter cutting and angled scrolling.”

End-users, tool critics, and manufacturers have long since recognized the need for such features on a reciprocating saw but, until now, there was no clear-cut solution. The new model 9740 utilizes an adjustable gear housing to offer a 180° pivot adjustment. These unique advantages allow the cutting arm of the saw to be angled 90° in either the up or down position. When positioned at 180°, the model 9740 is only 8.5² long, which proves to be 7² shorter than any other competitive reciprocating saw on the market. Additionally, its 13 positive stop locations permit the user to handle any conceivable cutting situation between the 90° settings.

In addition to the 180° pivot adjustment, the model 9740’s front gear housing features a 360° blade rotation with 12 positive stops. Ideal for plumbing and HVAC applications within confined spaces, this exclusive benefit enables the user to scroll as the rear gear housing is angled in any position.

Although the TIGER CLAW™ offers a host of revolutionary features, the model 9740 includes time-tested elements that end-users have grown to depend on. For example, Porter-Cable offers the same keyless blade clamp design from previous models. Users can change the blade in less than four seconds by turning the spring-loaded clamp, removing the worn blade, and dropping in the new one. The melonite finished steel blade clamp accepts the blade in both the upside down position for limited clearance applications where an upward cut is necessary as well as the standard position for downward cuts. An additional benefit to Porter-Cable’s unique blade clamp configuration is a new “U” shaped adapter insert that accepts universal shank jigsaw blades for added control during scrolling applications. The adapter insert is compatible with most competitive units.

Porter-Cable enhanced the Tiger Saw’s performance rating with a powerful 11.5 amp motor. Its variable speed ranges between 0 and 2,900 strokes-per-minute. Porter-Cable increased the TIGER CLAW™’s cutting stroke length to 1-1/4² for a more aggressive cutting action - taking more stock with each stroke. The 100% ball bearing design provides longer life and smoother operation.

The new TIGER CLAW™ also offers a Quik-Change™ front shoe, which can be extended (or removed) to utilize more of the blade’s teeth in the cutting action. Pivoting shoe adjustments can be made easily with a conveniently located lever, which has been molded into the bottom of the front gear housing. Weighing only nine pounds, the model 9740’s overall length is 18²; however, its length reduces to 8-1/2² when the arm of the tool is angled at 90°.

The Quik-Change™ Tiger™ Saw kit comes complete with the model 9740, a plastic carrying case, a 6T bi-metal blade (model # 12455), and instruction manual. Available in early March, the new model 9740 TIGER CLAW is expected to sell for approximately $299.
