Canada goose repellent
Are Canada geese taking over your yard and leaving lots of little "presents" behind? Want to keep them off your lawn? Try GooseChase.

It’s a spray-applied, non-lethal repellent that makes the geese’s food supply unpalatable and inedible. And when their food supply is gone, so are the geese!

GooseChase comes in a 1-gal. concentrate and sells for $95. One gallon covers 1 acre.

Bird-X Inc., Dept. TFH, 300 North Elizabeth St., Chicago, IL 60607; (800) 662-5021.

Delta 10-in. compound miter saw
The Delta 10-in. Compound Miter Saw crosscuts 2x6 and 4x4 lumber at 90 degrees. It can miter a 2x4 flat or on edge at 45 degrees both left and right. And it has miter indexing and a bevel scale with adjustable stops for cutting compound angles on crown moldings. These are standard features, so what’s the big deal? How about getting them all and Delta quality for about $189!

Look for the Delta 36-075 Compound Miter Saw at home centers and power equipment stores.

Delta International Machinery Corp., Dept. TFH, 246 Alpha Dr., Pittsburgh, PA 15238; (800) 438-2486.

Attractive vinyl lattice
Tuff-Bilt Dimensions Weave Lattice is so good-looking, it’s hard to believe it’s not wood. It’s made of high-density, UV-resistant polyethylene, which won’t crack, rot or mildew. It can be cut with a circular saw, and unlike wood, it holds together when cut in small pieces. And best of all, you never have to paint it!

Tuff-Bilt Weave Lattice is sold in 4 x 8-ft. panels and comes in white and forest green. A panel sells for about $40. Look for it at home centers and some lawn and garden outlets.

Plastics Research Corp., Dept. TFH, 3200 Robert T. Longway Blvd., Flint, MI 48506-4043; (800) 394-6679.

Perfboard tool holder
Believe it or not, there really is a better perfboard hook. It’s the Talon Perfboard Toolholder, and there’s no way it’ll fall off when you remove the tool.

The Talon hooks feature a patented locking system that uses a removable nylon screw for holding them in place. Just push the screw through the locking tab and the tab locks in place. The hooks are thick nylon and can handle heavy tools.

Talon Perfboard Toolholders come in lots of different sizes and shapes for all kinds of applications. Prices range from 49¢ to 59¢ per hook. A 32-piece set sells for $16.

The Hollingsworth Co., Dept. TFH, P.O. Box 3757, Chatsworth, CA 91313; (818) 718-6323.

Smaller size of joint compound
Finally, someone is packaging a setting-type joint compound in a smaller quantity. USG’s Easy Sand comes in a 4-lb. box, instead of the usual 18-lb. bag. The new size is just right for making smaller drywall repairs. And since it’s Easy Sand, it’s quick-setting, so you can complete most repairs in one day.

The 4-lb. box sells for about $3.50 at home centers, hardware stores and paint supply stores.

United States Gypsum Co., Dept. TFH, 4849 N. Scott St., Suite 200, Schiller Park, IL 60176; (800) 874-4968.

Aerosol spray texture
When you repair a textured ceiling, the hardest part (actually, it’s almost impossible) is matching the original texture. But with Spray Tex Aerosol Spray Texture, you’ll come pretty close. It comes in three textures: Acoustic (for popcorn-type ceilings), Orange Peel (for lighter textures) and Heavy/Knock Down.

The sizes and coverages vary. A 12-oz. can of the Acoustic texture, which covers 4 to 9 sq. ft., costs about $10. Look for them at home centers and paint stores.

Spray Tex, Dept. TFH, 23679 Calabasas Rd., No. 510, Calabasas, CA 91302; (800) 234-5979.

Slip-on bit holder
Drilling pilot holes and then driving screws just got easier and faster with the Slip-Tip Drill N’ Driver. Insert the magnetic driver into your drill chuck for driving screws and when it’s time to drill a pilot hole, just slide the Slip-Tip over the magnetic driver. Once the pilot hole is drilled, remove the Slip-Tip and drive the screw.

The Slip-Tip Drill N’ Driver sells for under $20 and is available at The Home Depot in the Northeast. Or it can be ordered from the manufacturer.

R & J Tool & Design Inc., Dept. TFH, P.O. Box 517, Canton, MA 02021; (781) 821-5992.

Trackless shower door
The trackless shower door is good design that keeps on getting better.

Kohler’s new Helios shower doors retract and then pivot in and out without a top or bottom track, giving you unobstructed access to the tub. The door automatically lifts as it’s opened and lowers to a waterproof seal when it’s closed. Without tracks to collect dirt, tub cleaning is faster and easier.

Made of aluminum, the Helios door frames are available in a bright brass tone, silver or white. The tempered-glass panels are available in three patterns. Prices start at $550.

Kohler Co., Dept. TFH, Kohler, WI 53044; (920) 457-4441.

Compact belt sander
With Skil’s new 1278VS Compact Belt Sander, you can have the speed and power of a belt sander and yet work in spots too tight for a full-sized machine.

The 1-1/2 in. wide belt runs on a 5/16-in. roller tip that lets you reach into cramped areas. The sander can be turned 180 degrees, allowing you to sand in all directions. It has a 3.3-amp motor, variable speed and a quick-change lever to make belt changing easy. The lever also allows for precise belt adjustment.

The Compact Belt Sander sells for about $140 and is available at home centers and hardware stores.

S-B Power Tool Co., Dept. TFH, 4300 West Peterson Ave., Chicago, IL 60646-5999; (773) 286-7330.

Clamp-on halogen light
Now you can have the brightness of a halogen light in almost any location with Regent Lighting’s Halogen Clamp Light (MCL50).

It has both a spring clamp and a hook, so it’s pretty tough to find a spot where you can’t use it. It also stays put when it’s clamped, something that most other so-called clamp lights don’t seem to do very well. The light is UL-listed for both indoor and outdoor use and in wet locations too, so it’s safe for places like under a sink or a car. It has a tempered safety glass lens and a metal lens guard.

The Halogen Clamp Light sells for about $15 at home centers.

Regent Lighting Corp., Dept. TFH, P.O. Box 2658, Burlington, NC 27216; (910) 226-2411.

Privacy miniblinds
If daylight peeping through your bedroom miniblinds makes sleep impossible, check out Kirsch’s Medallion Privacy miniblinds.

The aluminum slats are stacked closer together for more overlap and tighter closure, giving you less light and more privacy. And the holes for the cords are completely concealed when the blinds are closed, so light can’t leak through.

The Medallion miniblinds come in more than 100 colors and can be sized to fit almost any window. Look for them wherever window treatments and shades are sold.

Kirsch, Dept. TFH, 309 N. Prospect, P.O. Box 370, Sturgis, MI 49091-0370; (616) 659-5100.

Dimmable compact fluorescent bulb
First came the compact fluorescent (CF) bulb, followed by the dimmable CF. However, both needed a special adapter to make them fit most lamps. But Philips Lighting has changed that.

The Earth Light is a 23-watt CF (same as a 90-watt incandescent) that can be used with standard wall dimmers, motion detectors and photocell fixtures. The Earth Light has an average life of 10,000 hours, compared with 750 hours for an incandescent lamp.

Look for the Earth Light at home centers and lighting stores. It sells for about $25.

Philips Lighting, Dept. TFH, 200 Franklin Square Dr., Somerset, NJ 08875; (732) 563-3000.

A spray gun for all coatings
I’m sure there’s been a time or two when you wished you had a certain paint or stain in a spray. Well, now you can have it with the Preval Portable Spray Gun.

The unit consists of a 9-oz. glass jar and a replaceable power spray canister. Just pour the paint or stain into the jar, follow the instructions for thinning and you’re ready to go. One power canister (CFC-free) can spray up to 16 ozs. before it needs replacing.

You can spray both latex- and oil-based products. The only drawback to spraying latex paint is that you need to thin it quite a bit, so the color may be lighter than you want. Test-spray any of the coatings to be sure the color is what you want.

The Spray Gun kit sells for about $12. Replacement power canisters sell for about $4. Look for them at paint stores and full-service hardware stores.

Preval Sprayer Division, Dept. TFH, Precision Valve Corp., 700 Nepperhan Dr., P.O. Box 309, Yonkers, NY 10702; (800) 431-2922.

Safer cutting guide
Many people (myself included!) have nicked
a finger when cutting along a straightedge. The knife blade accidentally slips on the straightedge and -- oops! -- you’ve got a nasty cut that needs a couple of stitches. But with the Safe-T-Rule, your digits are protected.

The angled steel design lets you place your hand firmly and safely behind the straightedge. Now you can press down hard enough to do some good as you’re cutting, without worrying about cutting yourself.

The Safe-T-Rule comes in 18-, 24-, 36- and 52-in. lengths. Prices range from $15 to $27.

Woodworker’s Supply, Dept. TFH, 1108 North Glenn Rd., Casper, WY 82601; (800) 645-9292.
